When the tragic death of Patty Gilmore occurred, family, friends, patients, and contemporaries-all those who were considered advocates for Doctor Irvin Gilmore-stepped forward to support him when he was charged with criminal homicide. He was a man who had always shown good character and more importantly was a doctor who possessed a profound dedication to his patients. This trait had made him a celebrity in his community. After reading this book you might agree or disagree with the verdict that was handed down in 1987 by the Gilmore jury. But the verdict isn't the critical aspect of this case. It's the unknown and unanswered circumstances that dominated this complicated case from the very beginning that has caused it to remain a mystery to this day. Even though much of the memory and the speculation about it will fade away, as history always does, it will long continue to be an open case in the minds of many. Fortunately, reading and understanding all the evidence in the long series of events allows readers the luxury of judging Doctor Gilmore's innocence or guilt in their own minds without the stress of being a member of an improperly influenced jury so prevalent in these types of celebrity cases. Rule him innocent based on the facts, not because he was a respected and committed family doctor. Decide if he's guilty based on the facts, not because he was a heavy drinker who perhaps harbored jealousy over his beautiful, much younger wife who could be hard to control. Patty Gilmore's tragic death marked the beginning of a long, tangled web of legal proceedings that matched a determined team of prosecutors against a well-known & well-qualified defense attorney.

This was not your typical spousal death and it transpired in the neighborhood where I was raised. Dr. Gilmore was one of the doctors our family used when he was available. The book is full of suspense and a good read. Having moved away from home before the trial ended, it put closure on the outcome for me. Well written - worth your time and money.Product details

The Death of Doctor Gilmore Wife Gary Ludwig 9780981509952 Books Reviews
Finally a book that explains the details of this complicated murder case. Gary Ludwig obviously did a terrific job of researching and writing this detailed account of what really happend when Patricia Gilmore died tragically. The book explains how she lived the good life-money, nice clothing, and a much older doctor for a husband. Unfortunately alcohol had consumed a larger and larger part of her life as the years went by. Ludwig reveals that doc Gilmore also liked his alcohol, and explains how a great doctor, devoted to his patients, could have such a screwed up personal life. The book reveals how their marriage was fueled by alcohol, and then proceeds to disentangle many of the aspects of the complicated legal proceedings that followed her death. For the people who have had so many questions about this case over the years, reading this book explains the many details while separating fact from fiction. Unfortunately many questions will never be answered, but Ludwig's research answers all the ones that could be answered. It was also pleasurable to read a book written by an author who writes clearly, making sure that readers dont get left behind. And the courtroom drama is fantastic! I became a virtual detective and juror! I recommend this book to anybody who likes to read murder stories and watch the details of justice served.
This took place in the area I now reside. Many of the characters I recognize. Eye opening how laws and lawyers work and how easily a crime can be mussed up by authorities goofs whether purposely or neglectfully.
I grew up in Reading/Muhlenberg Twp. and Gil was my doc growing up as was our entire family. I had moved away for many years before this event happened and was interested in the detail and characters. It brought back memories of the area. Enjoyable, easy read.
Poorly written. Bad author. The story is told in a fairly good fashion, but there are many grammatical errors as well as missing pieces of the story.
My wife and I know several of the people in the book, although not Dr Gilmore himself. For us, therefore, it is an interesting story and well worth the cost and time-It is a quick read. Others will probably find the writing to be plus/minus at best, although the book does offer insight into the types of politics and intrigue that are endemic to our political systems at the local level.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who remembers this bizarre real tragedy!! The author really knows his stuff and makes it hard for the reader to put this book down.
Enjoyed reading this book based on true Barks County case!!
Love in Centre Two worked in law office in Reading!
